What happens when an AI agent wants to buy data from another autonomous agent?
In the human economy, the answer is simple: you enter your credit card details, an invoice is generated, and the bank approves the transaction within a multi-day clearing cycle. But in the agent economy, this process is entirely broken. Autonomous software doesn't have time to wait days to settle an invoice, nor the budget to tolerate high percentage-based commission friction.
In a system where agents can execute thousands of API calls in seconds, scrape cross-chain data, or lease computational power on the fly, a fundamentally new financial settlement layer is required.
This is where machine-specific payment protocols step in. When we look at live on-chain data, two primary architectural models have emerged to solve this, each serving a distinctly different purpose: x402 and Tempo MPP.
x402 and Tempo MPP • Two Faces of HTTP 402
Both standards draw their foundational logic from the long dormant HTTP 402 Payment Required status code. However, they approach machine settlement in completely different ways
1. x402 Per-Request Settlement
The x402 protocol turns every single HTTP request into an atomic payment gate. An agent sends a request to an API, pays a micro amount, and closes the transaction instantly.
As of late August 2026, over 174 million transactions have been executed across this network. The average x402 transaction size is a mere $0.24. This model lays the perfect foundation for the instantaneous low cost and stateless resource purchases that agents require.
2. Tempo MPP Continuous Micro Streaming
If an agent needs to perform hundreds of LLM inferences per second or feed a continuous data stream, settling every single transaction on a blockchain mainnet becomes architecturally clunky and expensive. Instead of per-request settlement, Tempo MPP Machine Payments Protocol operates by opening payment channels.
A state channel is opened between two systems, and transactions flow through this channel as a continuous micro stream. Recent data shows over 45,000 indexed channel events on the network. Tempo provides the uninterrupted bandwidth required for high-frequency machine-to-machine (M2M) resource leasing.
From Human Behavior to Machine Behavior • The AiFi Era
This infrastructural shift is not just about an increase in transaction volume; it is about changing the fundamental nature of finance.

AiFi is the financial layer for an economy where agents trade, earn, and spend. The massive surge in agentic transfer volume across high-speed blockchains shows how aggressively the infrastructure layer is positioning itself to capture this new machine liquidity.
Software is no longer just lines of code processing data; it is an independent economic actor allocating capital, managing budgets, and making autonomous decisions in milliseconds.
