What if your neighbour could buy electricity directly from your home?
This is the idea behind peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading.
Imagine a house with solar panels. During the day, it produces more electricity than the household needs. Instead of simply sending the surplus back to the grid, that energy could be sold directly to another nearby household.
Blockchain can help make this possible.
A blockchain-based platform can record how much energy was produced, who bought it and how much was paid. Smart contracts can automate the transaction without requiring every step to be managed manually.
The result is a different energy model:
Local producer → Digital platform → Local consumer
Projects such as Power Ledger have explored how blockchain can support local energy markets and renewable energy trading.
But the bigger opportunity is not simply removing intermediaries.
It is creating more flexible and local energy markets.
Solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles and smart meters could become connected assets within the same ecosystem.
A household could produce energy, store it, sell the surplus and even buy electricity when prices are lower.
The energy system therefore becomes more dynamic.
Instead of energy moving only from large power plants to consumers, value can move between homes, businesses, batteries and vehicles.
There are still major challenges: regulation, grid capacity, pricing, cybersecurity and the physical limits of electricity networks.
So P2P energy trading is not a replacement for the traditional grid.
It could, however, become an important layer within the next generation of energy markets.
The future of energy may not be only about producing more.
It may be about enabling millions of small producers to participate.
