Before You Fund an Agent, Define Its Mandate

The Infrastructure Layer Bridging Agency and Settlement
When we talk about giving agents a mandate, we are talking about shifting from human-authenticated transactions to machine-native execution. That shift requires infrastructure designed specifically for autonomous actors:
HTTP-Native Settlement (The x402 Standard)
Instead of heavy subscription models or manual API keys, protocols like x402 revive the long-dormant "Payment Required" status code. When an AI agent requests a service, data, or compute, the server responds with a structured, machine-readable invoice. The agent signs a micro-payment in stablecoins (like USDC), settles it on-chain in seconds, and receives the resource, entirely without human intervention.
Programmable Authority (KYA - Know Your Agent)
Just as traditional finance relies on KYC, agentic finance requires robust identity and permission frameworks. Autonomous systems need cryptographic proof of who authorized them, what limits govern their wallets, and when their operational window closes.
An agent cannot simply be given a private key and a prayer. True agentic commerce demands that every machine-to-machine transaction be bound by explicit structural constraints, ensuring that autonomy never outruns accountability.
